Job Description: The intern will work within MySeniorCenter database to clean, standardize and analyze participation and program data into reports that will help management make informed decisions about programming, grant reporting and community outreach.
Key Tasks
- Data Audit & Cleanup
- Review existing records for duplicate entries, incomplete profiles, and outdated contact information
- Standardize data entry formats (names, addresses, program categories) for consistency
- Identify unused modules if appropriate to programs and services offered
- Reporting & Analysis
- Pull attendance and participation data by program, month, and other categories
- Build simple recurring reports (e.g., monthly meal counts, program attendance trends, volunteer hours) for management use
- Identify usage patterns — which programs are growing, which are underutilized, and when peak attendance occurs
- Grant & Funder Support
- Compile data summaries needed for grant applications and required funder reporting (e.g., unduplicated participant counts, service hours, age categories, for examples)
- Dashboard/Visual Summary Creation
- Create simple, readable charts or a one-page dashboard summarizing key metrics for the Executive Director and Board
- Documentation
- Write a short “how-to” guide documenting the reports/processes built, so staff can continue using them after the internship ends
Learning Objectives
- Database literacy — Gain hands-on experience navigating and querying a real-world nonprofit database (MySeniorCenter) used for service tracking and reporting, SharePoint for reports storage, Outlook for communications, and PowerPoint for presentations.
- Data cleaning skills — Learn practical techniques for identifying and correcting data quality issues in a live operational dataset.
- Applied analysis — Practice translating raw participation data into meaningful insights that inform program and funding decisions.
- Nonprofit reporting fluency — Understand how data supports grant compliance and funder relationships in a small nonprofit setting.
- Communication of data — Develop the ability to present findings clearly to non-technical stakeholders (Board members) through simple visuals and summaries.
