Purpose of the Program
Picnic in the Park exists to feed children through the summer. It is administered by the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction in Washington State (OSPI) and sponsored by FISH. As a sponsor, FISH provides thousands of meals during the short weeks of summer to provide for children without enough food to eat due to the lack of free/reduced lunch during that time. The program’s goals include:
- Feeding every child who needs food – regardless of any category or requirement
- Providing healthy meals using School Meal (OSPI) regulations
- Creating a solid working team for the summer
- Keeping costs low
Purpose of This Position
The SFSP (Summer Food Service Program) Intern will help organize, administer and manage the Picnic in the Park program for the Spring and Summer quarter of 2026. This will include assisting with the annual application, training staff and equipping the program. It will also include assisting in hiring and managing program staff. Goals include learning about:
- Administration of a medium sized program
- Working with grant restrictions and requirements
- Administration of a non-profit
- Managing staff and creating a team
Duties – Quarter 1: Program Preparation
- Creating, editing, obtaining, filing, copying, etc. files for the OSPI application, site calendar, route map and other necessary documents
- Assist in hiring site and kitchen staff
- Finalize training details for all staff including training decks, necessary paperwork and supplies needed
- Facilitate ordering program supplies
- Plan and organize activities for children to take home
- Other duties as necessary to fulfill program goals
Duties – Quarter 2: Program Administration
- Maintain and facilitate the milk orders and ordering of other supplies
- Creating filing systems and preparing forms for daily use
- Assist in creating and maintaining spreadsheets for billing purposes
- Continue maintaining supply levels, including ordering when necessary
- Facilitate activities for children, including record keeping
- Work closely with staff to maintain the program goals
- Other duties as necessary to fulfill program goals
Requirements
- Proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint required
- Proficiency with databases and Canva (or Adobe Illustrator) preferred
- Ability to work the occasional weekend day (4-5 total)
- Have a driver’s license
- Spanish proficiency preferred
